Typhoon Weather Index Crop Insurance in the Philippines

In what is believed to be a world first at the micro level, MicroEnsure has launched a weather index typhoon insurance product to protect smallholder rice farmers from the financial risk of crop damage by typhoons. Starting in May, the insurance pilot for 2009 covers over 2000 farmers on Panay Island, The Philippines, and it is planned to significantly increase in scale if the pilot proves successful
